Last year I ticked a bunch of Hobart’s Top 10 Climbs off my list and had a pretty good year on the bike in the process. I live around a 40km each-way cycle from Hobart central, so to tackle most of the climbs I usually need to borrow the better half’s car or leave a bike at the office.
I was stoked to finally ascend the HC rated Mount Wellington last year! That was a fantastic climb and my biggest, ten miles uphill from sea level.
It’s definitely one I plan on repeating before it’s snow-capped for the winter. The view from the top on a clear day is spectacular. It’s a shame there’s no cafe at the top (yet) and Lost Freight on the way back down is easy to miss when you’re bombing it downhill at 60+ kph!
My favourite is still Mount Nelson. The seven switchbacks snaking their way up the side of the mountain can be ridden at a relaxed tempo or solid extended effort (or FTP test if you’re so inclined). An added bonus for us early risers is that the Signal Station at the top is one of the finest places to take in a Hobart sunrise.
This year I am going to tick off the final few climbs and complete the set. First on the list is Waterworks. Apparently this a a toughie, with some sharp ramps!
Hope your 2019 on two wheels is shaping up nicely! #keepcycling
