That fleeting feeling of fitness

Do you ever have those weeks where you feel like you’re flying? Like you’re dancing on the pedals? I’ve not had many in my years of cycling, but recently I’ve felt like I’ve been riding strong (for me) while hardly putting pressure on the pedals. It’s what many would refer to as being “in form” I guess.

I’m not talking about Tadej Pogačar levels of form. I’m not crushing races with monster solo breaks or blowing everyone away. It’s more a heightened state of fitness compared to my usual level. A tangible and noticeable increase.

I felt this form coming on at the Tour de Brisbane. Well, for the first 90km at least! I’d been training hard for months leading up to it, and my body had most likely been in a state of constant fatigue since January and the Tour Down Under training block.

I’ve been increasing my weekly saddle time, as well as following a decent structured training plan. Heading into the Tour de Brisbane I was fresh, rested, and I could certainly tell my form was good.

I know it won’t last. These things never do. Fitness, especially cycling fitness, ebbs and flows.

Right now I’m riding the crest of the wave. My training load is about to ramp up again. I probably have another week tops before this catches up to me and I’m building fatigue levels once again. That’s all good though, you need to break down to back build up stronger. I’ll just try and enjoy this taste of form and fitness for a few more days!

  1. Yeah, be careful of that feeling. I rode 312 miles (502 km) in three days. Not bad for an old man, and I felt great. The next day I came down with COVID-19.
