On the weekend I was thinking to myself; I must post a half-yearly update. Six months have gone by already so it’s about the right time. But wait! I soon realised I needed to flip the calendar, and it’s actually AUGUST already! That’s not six, but SEVEN months of 2024 down, and now into the eighth…
I’m sure I’ve said this many times before, but the days, the weeks, the months, they just seem to fly by with ever increasing velocity. Madness.
That said, it’s been a darn good 2024. Sure there have been a couple of health issues that have kept me from “my best” but I’m still here giving it a good crack. I’ve enjoyed some fantastic adventures on and off the bike, and ridden a decent number of miles already. Enough, at least, for somebody who still works full time, also has to fit in social commitments, and keep up with the endless chores around the farm.
I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given this year. I know I am pretty lucky.
Aside from cycling, I’ve been trying to get into a routine of other forms of exercise. As much as I love cycling first and foremost, I know that doing nothing but cycling does not make for a well rounded athlete (or even a healthy one). On the recommendation of health professionals I’ve added in some weight bearing activities, like running and strength training.
I have also fallen back in love with my other two wheeled passion, motorbikes. My enthusiasm for motorised two wheeled pursuits dropped off when I stopped commuting daily. But now, with the freedom to ride more for pure enjoyment, I’m back and loving it once again.
In not so fantastic news, I found out this week that we lost another cycling brother. Matt Eager, a friend and riding buddy from back in my UK cycling days, was taken from us by the big C.
I knew Matt through the club. I would say that he and I were part of the “Woking CC Original” crew. Matt was known for being an all-round top guy, with a great sense of humour and ever-upbeat attitude. He will of course be dearly missed by all who knew him. RIP Matt. Ride high, my good buddy.
I hope you have all been making the most of what 2024 has offered you so far, whether that be on the bike or in other pursuits. Remember, life is short and fragile. Stay fit, say “yes” to adventure, and take care of one another.
Most of all, keep those wheels turning and the rubber side on the road!

sounds like your in a good place. Sorry to hear about your buddy though

Yes Matt was an all round top guy and an excellent social secretary. He moved away to Liverpool a few years ago so we lost touch a bit but I saw him and had a good chat with him at Debbie’s wedding late last year.
Matt was responsible for the design of our club crest you included in your newsletter. We’ve had to change it recently to respect the greater diversity of our membership. You’ll notice that what was the beer glass is now a bidon. Just moving with the times.
So the Kwaker is now exchanged for a Harley?

I still have the Ninja, but it’ll have to move on soon enough. Unfortunately I can’t justify the N+1 thing for my motorbikes!
I’d forgotten about Matt designing the club crest, thanks for jogging that memory. I did wonder about the bidon change. I only noticed it as I was looking for a higher-res logo than the one I had saved on my laptop, and nabbed that new one off the WCC website.
