Got a Shimano 11-speed groupset? Check your cranks! Shimano issue recall on Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranks

After a number of years hearing whispers that Shimano cranksets were failing under load, it looks like Shimano is set to issue a WORLDWIDE RECALL of certain models of Ultegra and Dura Ace 11-speed cranksets! Allegedly, the bonded components of the crankset “can separate and break, posing a crash hazard to consumers.”

According to the reports so far, the recall has started in the USA and Canada, with the possibility of recalls to follow worldwide shortly. The recalled cranksets are certain 11-speed models, Ultegra and Dura Ace, manufactured in 2019 or earlier. Previous era 10-speed, newer 12-speed, and 105-level cranksets are not affected by this recall.

According to the press release; “The specific models affected are the 11-speed compatible Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000 and Dura-Ace FC-R9100 chainsets, as well as the FC-R9100P power meter variant.”

To confirm if your crankset is one of the affected models, you need to check on the crank arm for the manufacturing code. If your crank has one of the following codes, it has been recalled:

A number of my bikes are equipped with Ultegra 11-speed cranks of some description, so I am going to have to check all of my bikes today!

UPDATE: Grrrr. My Kinesis Aithein has a “PD” coded Ultegra R8000 model crank…

  1. Thanks for this excellent info. Make me glad my 11 speed is Campagnolo. My 7 speed Shimano 600 (forerunner of Ultegra) still works well! (In those days, a crankset didn’t care how many cogs were on the back end.)

Eeeek!!! I’ve got 3 of those, fortunately none are showing signs of delamination. Obviously not producing enough power. Not good though. Need to keep an eye on them I guess since, by the look of it, they are only swapping them out if there are problems.

I freaked out when I saw this, then I remembered I replaced my with Tiagra. I hope that’s ok. But then again, that’s a triple, that hardly anyone has.
