First up let me be clear. I’m a huge believer in supporting your local bike shop and buying local, but sometimes to get what you want you need to order online. This is especially true down here in “deep south” Tasmania where things are harder source.
So when I was in the market for a new bike, I did my research and the bike I wanted at the price I could justify just happened to be from the web-only supplier, Canyon. When I placed my order (during the peak COVID craziness) the Canyon website stated a 4-6 week delay on processing bike sales. My bike arrived on my doorstep just 12 days after ordering! I’ve had local online orders take longer than that.
Ain’t no better day than NEW BIKE DAY!
The parcel was tracked the entire journey and arrived securely packed in a well-padded cardboard bike box (which you pay for) with everything neatly organised inside it. You get a massive manual, carbon paste, all the spares and Di2 accessories, even a basic torque wrench!
Almost everything is pre-assembled, so as long as you’re not totally mechanically inept you should have zero issuesΒ getting your new bike ready. Pretty much the only assembly needed is…
- Slot in front wheel
- Attach bars and tighten headset
- Insert seat post
- Screw on your pedals of choice
- Adjust everything to your measurements!
One downside is that you can’t customise your bike online. While assembling, I removed the 52/36 chainset for a more friendly 50/34 because I am a weakling that’s my preference. Then it was on with the Canyon out-front Garmin mount, my Elite Vico carbon bottle cages (23g each) and Assioma Duo pedals. Job done!
Fully loaded weight is 7.6kg (16.7 pounds). That’s pedals, cages, the lot. I recon that isn’t too bad for an all-out aero bike with 62mm deep rims and a powermeter.
Canyon Aeroad CF SL Di2. Cue new bike blowing over in 3, 2, 1…
So how does it ride? Well, anyone who tells you “it’s not about the bike” has not ridden enough fast bikes. This thing is responsive, slippery and racy! Fast! Fast! Fast! I’ve put over 650km on it already and it is an absolute blast!
Oh, the new day bike – such an amazing feeling!
I also ordered my bike online from Canyon’s website and I had a very good experience. This happened in July last year, but I still remember my amazement when it arrived so well packed in the “made with passion” box and with so many extra things (like the musette bag). Happy with the bike, happy with the experience :)

I found it difficult to go past the value of Canyon bikes! I found everything down to the tyres supplied were usable which is very rare for a new bike these days! I do like the finer touches in their engineering too!!! Happy riding ;-)

That bike is a beaut, man. If, and when, I buy a new bike it’ll be a Specialized or a Trek from my local shop. I just paid $86 for a PG-1070 cassette I could have gotten for $65 online. Perhaps once I retire I’ll become a little more frugal. I don’t blame you, though. Tasmania seems like it’d be a little different.

It’s a weapon that’s for sure, even with my little legs powering it! :-) I always buy local when I can (I’ve got a couple of good bike shops) but I’m a loooong way from the rest of the world down here when it comes to the bigger purchases. I was very tempted by the thought of a Venge…
