Dust off those turbo trainers folks, it’s time to get ready to battle it out for the chance to be crowned the errr, best, ummm, turbo trainer rider in your country…
Love it or loathe it, indoor virtual cycling is a thing now. The biggest player in this field – Zwift – have just announced the first ever Virtual National Championships. Yes. That’s right. Read that again, breathe deep and take it all in.
The National Championships for riding a turbo trainer.
Now I’m a big Zwift fan and all, but WTF?!?! :o
Get those pain caves ready, your country needs YOU!
According to the press release, riders “from across the globe will battle for a year’s worth of bragging rights and the right to wear the National Championship jersey for 12 months.” I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have bragging rights about taking that last town sign sprint before the cafe stop than being the best at pedalling in my garage.
For the 15 selected countries (the 15 most popular Zwifting countries) there will be a men’s and also women’s all-out race, with only the winner unlocking their virtual National Champs jersey.
The USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Sweden, South Korea, Denmark, Switzerland, France and Poland all have their own race on the 24th of February.
Not that I have ANY chance at the rainbow stripes, but the Aussie National Champs virtual race is being held later in the year, probably because it’s not indoor training season here now.
So get training people!
Or whatever it is you need to do to train for turbo training…
It’s a good job that all riders are decent and honourable folks because this won’t be an easy championship to monitor for chemicals or electricity! Will the motorbike fit onto the turbo?

Exactly! With all of the documented ways to cheat, this should be good…

I recon I could make the Ninja fit on the turbo. Would give me a handy 55,000 watts to play with! lol

I have a hard enough time staying on the trainer for 10 minutes. Before Zwift, I used to try to hang in with the Sufferfest videos, and I could barely last 15 minutes … if I don’t put much effort, maybe 30. Besides, in California, I can usually ride the roads, and if it’s dark, I’ve got really bright lights.
